The mottled grays and warm browns of its plumage dissolve softly into the out-of-focus background, giving the composition the stillness and gravity of a painting. Every feather is rendered with extraordinary clarity: the subtle layering of the breast, the delicate barring of the wings, the small ivory chevron at the throat.
