The waves break against the rocks behind him and the tide moves around his legs, and the white Andalusian stands in the middle of it all with the absolute stillness of a horse that has made its peace with the sea. Tide and Silence is a portrait of equine composure in the fullest sense — not the composure of training or restraint, but the deeper composure of a creature entirely at home in a world most horses would find alarming. The turquoise water swirls around his fetlocks, the mossy boulders rise behind him draped in green, the white surf breaks in the middle distance, and through all of it the stallion stands with his head lowered in quiet contemplation, the marked number on his flank the only reminder that this is not a wild horse on a wild shore but a working animal given a moment of extraordinary grace. The palette is rich and unexpected — the vivid turquoise of the Mexican coastal water, the deep green of the algae-covered rock, the pure white of the coat and the breaking wave — and yet the image reads as completely serene, the color held in balance by the stillness at its center.
