There is something ancient and ceremonial about a line of bison moving in single file across a snow-covered Yellowstone valley — each animal following the path broken by the one ahead, the herd reduced in the distance to a row of dark silhouettes against an infinite white landscape. This black and white panoramic captures that procession at its most graphic and most elemental — the bison strung across the middle of the frame like a living signature on the winter landscape, the frozen river below and the dark treeline above holding them in perfect compositional suspension.
