Silver Wind occupies a singular place in the Andalusian series — an image of such sustained tonal beauty and compositional elegance that it functions as much as a study in light as it does a portrait of a horse. The white stallion moves through the frame in three-quarter profile, his long mane streaming behind him in a slow, silken wave that trails across the full width of the image, each strand catching the light with the luminosity of spun silver against the dark, smoky background. Unlike the more explosive motion images in the collection, Silver Wind has a quality of unhurried, flowing movement — the horse at the collected trot or passage, every stride measured and deliberate, the energy contained and directed rather than released. The dark background is not the absolute black of the studio portraits but something softer and more atmospheric — a deep grey-green that suggests an outdoor setting at dusk, the ambient light wrapping the horse's form with a softness that gives the entire image the quality of a silver gelatin print from the golden age of fine art photography.
