In the depths of a Yellowstone winter, when temperatures drop to thirty below and the geothermal steam freezes on everything it touches, the American bison does not seek shelter. It does not huddle or shiver or look for a way out of the cold. It simply stands — massive, frost-covered, entirely indifferent to conditions that would be rapidly fatal to almost any other large mammal on the continent — and looks back at you with the particular expression of an animal that has been doing exactly this for ten thousand years and finds nothing remarkable about it whatsoever.
