Every scratch tells a story. Every worn snap button, every crease in the leather, every scuff on the boot toe — all of it accumulated slowly, honestly, through the particular demands of a working life spent in the saddle and on the land. Well Worn is an intimate study of the tools of the working cowboy rendered with the attention and the reverence they deserve: ornately tooled chocolate brown leather chaps pressed against faded denim, the intricate cream-colored inlay work still beautiful despite — or perhaps because of — the evidence of hard use, the silver snap buttons dulled to a warm pewter, the long leather fringe tangled and honest, the boot toe visible below emerging from its own accumulated history of work and weather and miles. The dark background is pure studio drama — a photographer's choice to isolate these objects completely, to remove all context and ask the viewer to look at them as the extraordinary handcrafted objects they are, to see the artistry in the tooling and the poetry in the wear. And there is genuine poetry here — the poetry of a craft tradition centuries old, of leather workers and saddlers and the cowboys who wore their work until it became part of them. The image has the quality of a still life painting — Flemish in its attention to texture and surface and the beauty of ordinary objects elevated by light and composition — and yet it is entirely, unmistakably Western, entirely American, entirely of this specific place and life and tradition.
