A step back from the intimate close portrait of The Buck, this image places the same mature whitetail in full relationship with his surroundings — the dense autumn brush of the National Bison Range rising around him on all sides in warm shades of amber, rust, and copper, the deer himself emerging from that landscape rather than standing apart from it. The wider frame reveals just how completely a mature buck can disappear into his environment, and how extraordinary it is when one chooses instead to hold his ground and look back. The eight-point rack sits above the brush line with quiet authority, and the horizontal format gives the image a sense of the landscape's breadth that the vertical portrait cannot.
