There is a particular stage in a bull elk's life when everything comes together at once — the body at its heaviest and most powerful, the rack at its most massive and most complex, the animal in the absolute prime of what it has spent years becoming — and this bull is precisely there. The Rack is a portrait of that prime: a mature Yellowstone bull elk in three-quarter view in the amber autumn meadow, his multi-point antlers rising above him with a dark, heavy authority that speaks to years of growth and the accumulated mineral wealth of a landscape that has fed and shaped him season by season. The rack is extraordinary — the main beams sweeping back and upward with a classic symmetry, the tines branching with the complex, almost architectural structure that makes a mature bull elk one of the most visually compelling subjects in North American wildlife photography. His neck is dark with the staining of the rut, his body heavy and deep-chested, his posture that of an animal alert and completely in command of the meadow around him.
