In full profile, the American bison reveals his true architecture — and it is staggering. The massive front-loaded body, the towering hump, the great woolly head carried low on a neck thick as a tree trunk, the surprisingly fine hindquarters tapering behind — this is a body plan shaped by millions of years and a landscape that no longer exists at the scale it once did, walking through Yellowstone's sagebrush flats in the golden light of a summer morning as though the intervening centuries are of no particular concern. The warm amber and copper of his summer coat glow in the raking light, and the dark conifer forest behind provides a backdrop of deep contrast that makes every detail of his form stand out with exceptional clarity.
