The canyon walls rise behind him in layers of pale sandstone and shadow, and against that ancient geology a cowboy and his horse move through the tall grass with quiet, unhurried purpose. Rope coiled at the saddle, vest buttoned against the morning air, he reads the terrain ahead with the easy confidence of someone who belongs here entirely. The scale of the badlands formation behind them gives the image a grandeur that purely open-range images cannot — horse and rider are small against that stone, but no less central for it, the human element grounding a landscape that might otherwise feel geologic and remote.
