The Grand Canyon in a storm is a different place entirely from the Grand Canyon in clear weather — the familiar geology transformed by the drama of the weather into something wilder and more primordial, the layered red and amber formations deepening in color as the light changes, the depths of the canyon darkening into shadow while the rain moves through in great grey curtains that soften and dissolve the far formations into something approaching abstraction. Canyon Storm captures that transformation at its most visually powerful: the view from the South Rim looking deep into the canyon as a full storm system moves through, the rain visible in the middle distance falling in long, vertical curtains into the canyon depths, the dark storm clouds above filling the upper portion of the image with a dramatic, turbulent energy that throws the warm red and amber of the canyon walls into extraordinary relief. A pale limestone outcrop in the immediate foreground grounds the composition with a tactile, close-up detail that draws the eye into the vast geological drama beyond — the near rock sun-warmed and specific, the far canyon walls moody and atmospheric, the distance between them one of the great vertiginous drops in the natural world. The layered geology reads with exceptional clarity in this light — the distinct horizontal bands of limestone, sandstone, shale, and schist each carrying its own color and texture, the two billion years of geological history laid out in readable sequence from rim to river.
