The Haflinger faces the lens directly in close, centered portrait, its warm chestnut face emerging from the surrounding darkness with the quiet intensity of a subject entirely comfortable being looked at, the small dark eyes calm and level beneath the broad, brilliant mass of white forelock that dominates the upper half of the frame. The forelock is the image's defining element — dense and luminous, catching the cool backlight with a brightness that sets it apart from the darkness around it like a halo of spun silk, the individual strands visible at the edges where the light finds them and dissolves them into the surrounding shadow.
