There are mornings at Yellowstone Lake when the sky catches fire before the sun has even cleared the horizon, and the water below becomes its mirror — doubling the spectacle, dissolving the boundary between lake and atmosphere into a single luminous field of color. This is one of those mornings. From deep magenta and rose at the zenith, the sky grades through coral and amber to a band of pure gold low on the horizon, the clouds arranged in long horizontal streaks that amplify the sense of light moving fast and changing by the minute. Below, the lake surface holds every shade perfectly, broken only by the dark silhouettes of rocky outcroppings in the foreground and the low plateau of a thermal promontory rising from the water in the middle distance.
Mist drifts in soft curtains above the far shore — hydrothermal steam rising in the cold morning air, adding another layer of mystery to a scene already verging on the otherworldly. The palette is one that painters have chased for centuries: the particular alchemy of fire and water at first light, when color is everything and form is secondary.
