The pickup man has come in fast and close, his horse matched stride for stride with the bronc, and the rider is making his transfer — that brief, practiced moment when the contest ends and the partnership begins. Shot in black and white with the packed grandstand dissolving into soft bokeh behind them, the image concentrates all its energy on the two horses and two men at the center: the bronc still moving forward with residual momentum, the pickup man steady and deliberate beside him, the rider caught in the instant between one world and the next. It is a side of rodeo that most spectators see but few truly notice — and this image asks you to notice.
