Coquina Dawn is a portrait of the Florida Atlantic coast at its most meditative and most distinctively itself, the warm amber tones of the coquina rock — a sedimentary formation unique to Florida's eastern coastline, composed of shell fragments and coral cemented together over millennia by the sea itself — glowing against the cool blue of the water and sky with a warmth that anchors the composition and draws the eye through the frame toward the distant horizon where a single wave breaks in the soft, even light. The long exposure is essential here — it transforms the rushing tide into something contemplative and painterly, the water flowing around and over the coquina formations in smooth, luminous arcs that reveal the underlying rhythm of the tide without the distraction of moment-to-moment turbulence. A line of rock formations leads the eye from the lower right of the frame deep into the middle distance, organizing the composition with the quiet, geological patience of things that have been doing exactly this for longer than anyone can meaningfully imagine.
