Across the wide open sagebrush of the Wyoming high desert, a paint mustang runs for the pure joy of it — no fence, no rider, no destination but the horizon. The black and white pinto markings are bold and graphic against the pale grass and sage, and the mane lifts in a dark wave above the crest of the neck as the horse drives forward with the explosive, ground-eating stride of an animal that has never been told where to go. Shot in panoramic format in black and white, the vast, featureless expanse of the desert behind him amplifies the sense of freedom and space — the horse is small against that landscape and enormous within it at the same time, a paradox that is the essential truth of the wild horse in the American West. Free and Wild is a companion to Running Free in its celebration of the mustang at liberty, but where that image is all speed and blur, this one is clarity and open space — a single horse, a vast land, and nothing between them. A defining image of Western freedom.
