Giant Sequoia — Yosemite Fine Art Print
From $450 Click photo for printing options and to purchase
There is no adequate preparation for a giant sequoia. You can read the numbers — the tallest living specimens over 300 feet, the widest trunks over 30 feet in diameter, the oldest individuals over 3,000 years old — and the numbers mean nothing until you are standing at the base of one, looking up at a trunk so massive and so deeply furrowed with rust-red bark that the forest around it seems to belong to a different scale entirely, the ordinary trees reduced to saplings, the sky moved further away, the whole sense of what a tree can be completely and permanently revised. Giant Sequoia captures that revision in a portrait of extraordinary color and compositional depth: two great sequoia trunks rising through a forest of young conifers, their deeply channeled bark glowing with the rich rust-red and amber tones that are the sequoia's most visually distinctive characteristic, the fresh spring green of the surrounding trees providing a color contrast of remarkable beauty and clarity. The composition moves from the immediate foreground bark — close enough to read every channel and ridge of the ancient surface — upward and back through the forest, the second trunk visible behind the first, a third suggested further back still, the whole image speaking to the plurality and the community of these trees, the way they grow in groves rather than in isolation, their ancient presence multiplied and deepened by the company of their kind. This is Yosemite beyond the valley — the quieter, deeper Yosemite of the Mariposa Grove, where the giants have been standing since before the Roman Empire and will be standing long after everything we have built has returned to the earth. A natural companion to Tunnel View — Yosemite Fine Art Print, Giant Sequoia completes a Yosemite collection that honors both the dramatic valley landscape and the ancient forest that surrounds it.
