Fleeting Moment earns its title completely — a grey wild stallion caught mid-gallop through the Wyoming sage, his dark mane streaming behind him in a long horizontal flag of motion, the image holding in perfect stillness a thing that was gone before the shutter had fully closed. The black and white treatment gives the open range landscape the timeless, elemental quality it deserves — the sage flat stretching in every direction to a low, pale horizon, the sky above open and featureless, the horse the single dynamic element in a world of horizontal stillness, his gallop cutting across the frame with an energy that the landscape itself seems to both enable and absorb. The grey coat — dappled and light, catching the flat range light with a subtle luminosity — reads beautifully in monochrome, the horse distinct against the darker sage without the sharp contrast of the black horses elsewhere in the collection, a gentler presence in the frame that suits both the subject and the mood of the image perfectly.
