Lake Clark National Park is one of Alaska's least visited and most extraordinary wilderness areas — and in summer, when the sedge grass grows tall and green across the coastal meadows, it becomes one of the finest places on earth to observe brown bears in their natural habitat. Here a sow moves alertly through the meadow while her two cubs flank her — one standing upright on its hind legs, nose lifted to read the air, the other close at her side. It is a scene of complete family cohesion, the cubs learning from every movement their mother makes, the sow alert to everything around her.
