Into the Mist is an image of pure feeling — a lone Gypsy Vanner moving away from the lens through the shallow surf of the Washington coast, its small dark form receding into a world of grey fog and still water that seems to have no horizon, no boundary, no end. The horse is small in the frame and growing smaller, its mane and tail just visible as dark wisps of motion against the enveloping white of the coastal mist, and the wet sand at low tide mirrors the sky above so perfectly that the horse appears to move through a world made entirely of light. There is a profound and quiet melancholy to the composition — the solitary figure, the featureless expanse, the sense of something moving away into a place that cannot be followed — and yet it is not a sad image so much as a contemplative one, an invitation to stillness and the kind of sustained looking that fine art photography at its best always provides. The black and white treatment is essential here, stripping the scene of everything but tone and atmosphere and leaving only what the image is truly about: solitude, scale, and the particular freedom of a horse and an ocean and a morning fog that has made the world temporarily infinite.
