The Parting is the most purely abstract image in Tamara Gooch's equine detail series — a composition so stripped of context that it arrives first as texture and light before revealing itself as something familiar and utterly unexpected. Shot from directly above and behind the Haflinger's poll, the image looks straight down the length of the horse's forelock as it parts naturally down the center and cascades forward in two luminous curtains of white hair, the dark line of the part running precisely through the middle of the frame like a spine of shadow through a field of light. The Haflinger is celebrated above all other breeds for the extraordinary volume and quality of its mane, and at this proximity that reputation becomes completely understandable — the individual strands catch the light with a softness and luminosity that is almost impossible to believe is hair rather than silk, and the whole mass of it dissolves at the edges into the pure black of the background with the gradual fade of something disappearing into deep water. The small neat ears just visible at the base of the frame are the only anchor to the animal beneath, grounding the abstraction with quiet precision.
