Listening completes and deepens Tamara Gooch's series of intimate equine detail studies — joining The Velvet Muzzle, The Parting, and Braided in a body of work that finds in the close examination of a single feature an entire world of texture, feeling, and meaning. The image is deceptively simple: a horse's ear, small and dark and perfectly formed, nestled deep within the cascading waves of a thick white mane that fills the frame from edge to edge in a landscape of luminous hair. And yet the simplicity is the point — the ear is the most expressive and communicative feature of the horse's body, the instrument through which it reads the world around it with a sensitivity no human sense can match, and by isolating it within the softness of the surrounding mane Gooch gives it the weight and attention it deserves. The black and white rendering transforms the mane into a study of extraordinary tonal subtlety — the individual strands catching the light at every conceivable angle, the mass of it creating a texture so tangible the viewer reaches instinctively toward it — while the dark ear at the center of the composition anchors the abstraction with quiet precision.
