The Masai giraffe is the tallest land animal on earth, and on the open Tanzanian savanna that height becomes a kind of architecture — a living tower moving across the landscape with a slow, rolling grace that belies the enormous distances it covers each day. This individual strides through the green wet-season grass under a sky full of building clouds, its irregular dark patches and long tapered neck making it unmistakably itself even at a distance. There is something deeply satisfying about a giraffe in its element — an animal so perfectly adapted to its landscape that it seems less like a creature living in it and more like a feature of it.
