Schwabacher's Landing is one of the most beloved locations in Grand Teton National Park, and images like this one make the reason plain. The still beaver ponds that pool along the Snake River here act as a perfect mirror, doubling the world above into a reflection so precise that the composition becomes nearly symmetrical — spruce and fir rising tall and dark against a sky of deep summer blue, their forms repeated with equal clarity in the water below. Through the treeline, the snow-covered summits of the Teton Range appear just above the canopy, brilliant white against the blue, anchoring the horizon with the range's characteristic drama and elevation.
The sky is alive with cumulus cloud, their forms also caught in the still surface below, so that the entire frame — water, trees, peaks, sky — participates in the reflection. The palette is one of extraordinary richness: the deep blue-green of the conifers, the cool white of the snow and clouds, the warm green of the meadow grasses at the water's edge, and the perfect blue of a Wyoming summer sky. There is a stillness to this image that is almost meditative — the kind of quiet that settles over a landscape when the wind has paused and the water has gone completely flat, and the world folds itself in half. Mirror Pines is a companion to Schwabacher's Dawn and Oxbow Bend spring images in Tamara Gooch's Grand Teton collection, and speaks to collectors drawn to the classic, enduring beauty of the American West at its most serene.
