The title says everything and nothing — because what Truce captures is not merely the cessation of conflict between two wild stallions, but something deeper and more surprising than that: the warmth that exists between rivals, the trust that can develop between animals who have tested each other completely and arrived, through that testing, at a relationship more complex and more tender than simple dominance or submission allows for. The two dark mustang stallions press their faces together against a background of warm, pale cream, their eyes closed or downcast, the long tangled manes falling across each other's necks in an intermingling that mirrors the closeness of the contact. The warm side light catches the bay tones in the darker coat and the subtle dappling of the grey, giving each horse its own distinct identity within the shared intimacy of the composition. There are no sharp edges here, no tension in the posture, nothing to suggest that these are animals capable of the explosive, committed violence of a serious stallion fight — and that is precisely the point. The moment after the truce is the moment when the real nature of the relationship is revealed, and what Tamara Gooch has found in this moment is not two defeated animals but two sentient beings choosing, for now, something other than conflict.
