The Grey Sound — Washington Pier Fine Art Print
From $450. Click photo for print options and to purchase
The Puget Sound has a grey that belongs entirely to itself — not the flat, featureless grey of an overcast day anywhere, but the particular layered, luminous grey of the Pacific Northwest in the kind of weather that residents learn to love or leave, the clouds building in dark and silver strata above a water surface so still it reflects the sky with the fidelity of polished pewter. The Grey Sound leads the viewer into that grey by the most direct possible route — a long wooden pier extending from the foreground to a vanishing point at the horizon, the railed sides converging with the mathematical precision of a perspective drawing, the worn planks carrying the eye forward past the still water on either side and the distant, tree-lined shores barely visible through the atmosphere, toward the pale luminous point where the pier and the sky and the Sound all arrive at the same place simultaneously. The overcast sky is the image's great subject — enormous, layered, and alive with the subtle movement of clouds that the flat water below mirrors with extraordinary fidelity, the whole upper half of the frame a study in the infinite variety of grey that the Pacific Northwest sky produces on the days that define it most completely. There is a solitude to this image that is entirely characteristic of the Washington coast — the pier empty, the water still, the distant shores holding their distance — and yet the solitude is not lonely but deeply restful, the particular peace of a landscape that has learned to find everything it needs in its own company. On ChromaLuxe Metal or Lumachrome HD TruLife Acrylic, the extraordinary atmospheric depth and the powerful vanishing point composition of The Grey Sound make it one of the most distinctively Pacific Northwest and meditative pieces in the collection — a natural companion to The Infinite Path and Coastal Tranquility for collectors drawn to coastal art with strong compositional architecture and a profound sense of place.
