There is a particular quality to the Pacific horizon at Oahu — the way the turquoise water meets the deep blue sky in a line so clean and so far away that the eye struggles to accept it as a real boundary rather than simply the place where two infinite things decide, for the sake of composition, to acknowledge each other. Endless Horizon is a portrait of that meeting point, reduced to its most essential and beautiful elements — the turquoise-teal surface of the Pacific in the foreground, gently textured by the trade wind swell, the horizon ruling the center of the frame with absolute geometric precision, and above it the towering white cumulus clouds that the Hawaiian trade winds build over the open ocean on clear afternoons, brilliant against the deep cobalt blue of the tropical sky. The panoramic format is the only format this image could have — the horizontal sweep of the composition mirroring the horizontal sweep of the Pacific itself, the clouds building from left to right across the upper half of the frame in a procession of white and shadow that gives the sky the same depth and movement that the water has below. There is no land in this image, no structure, no human presence of any kind — only ocean, sky, and the particular quality of blue that exists only in the tropics, where the water is warm enough and clear enough and deep enough to produce a color that has no equivalent anywhere else on earth.
