There are sunsets and then there are transformations — evenings when the California coast stops being a place and becomes a palette, the sky and the water and the wet sand all surrendering to the same extraordinary range of violet, magenta, and deep Pacific blue that no paint manufacturer has ever quite managed to reproduce and no camera sensor quite captures the way the human eye experiences it standing barefoot at the water's edge.
