Oxbow Bend is one of those locations that rewards the early alarm — the Snake River curves here in a broad meander that catches the first light of dawn on Mount Moran's glaciated face while the still water below holds a perfect reflection of the sky above. In autumn, the cottonwoods and willows along the banks turn gold and amber, adding a warmth to the scene that the cool pink and blue of the pre-sunrise sky does not diminish but only deepens. It is a composition that has drawn photographers for generations, and in the quiet of an autumn morning, with the birds barely stirring on the water, it is easy to understand why.
