Prairie Soul is one of the most quietly arresting portraits in Tamara Gooch's Wyoming wild horse collection — a dark mustang with an unexpectedly pale, flaxen mane standing in close three-quarter profile against the washed-out white of the open range sky, the contrast between the deep richness of the coat and the luminous softness of the mane giving the image a visual tension and beauty that holds the eye without effort. The horse's head is carried with the relaxed, inward quality of an animal entirely at home in its landscape, the long flaxen forelock falling across the face with a natural grace that no grooming could improve upon, the eye quiet and deep beneath it.
