The hills of Rajasthan have a color that exists nowhere else — a deep, warm terracotta that shifts between amber and rust and burnished gold depending on the light, and that seems to hold within it the memory of every season and every hoofbeat that has ever crossed it. Red Earth Running places a white Marwari horse with chestnut markings at the crest of one of those hills, in full motion, dust rising beneath his hooves as he crests the ridge with the easy, powerful stride of an animal completely at home in terrain this ancient and this demanding. The landscape is as much the subject as the horse — the rolling amber hills stretching into soft focus behind him, scattered scrub trees punctuating the ridgeline, the warm evening light wrapping everything in the particular gold that belongs to the Indian subcontinent at the end of the day. Against all of that warmth the horse is a study in contrast — white coat catching the light, chestnut patches grounding him in the earth tones of the landscape, the characteristic inward-curving ears of the Marwari breed unmistakable even in motion.
