There is something ancient and resolute about a lighthouse on a stormy coast — a human structure holding its ground against forces that have never once paused to consider it. At Heceta Head on the central Oregon coast, the lighthouse and its keeper's cottage sit high on a dark rocky promontory, white against the trees, small against the sky, and yet utterly commanding in the landscape. In this image, the Pacific is in full voice: white surf churns across the foreground rocks and spills in broad sheets across the lower headland, the swell rolling in from the open ocean in long, overlapping lines that speak to the scale of what lies beyond the frame. The sky is the particular silver-gray of the Oregon coast in its moody, atmospheric best — not stormy exactly, but serious, the light diffuse and cool and even.
The lighthouse itself occupies the upper right of the composition with the quiet confidence of something that has stood exactly there through a great many days like this one. The dark mass of the headland and its crown of Sitka spruce anchor the right side of the frame, while the left opens wide to the full expanse of the Pacific, horizon barely distinguishable from sky. The panoramic format suits the image perfectly, giving full measure to both the intimacy of the lighthouse and the immensity of the ocean it watches over. Sentinel is a image for collectors who are drawn to the romance and drama of the Pacific Northwest coast — to places where the land meets the sea on terms that have never quite been settled.
