Silver Thread — Multnomah Falls, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

At 620 feet, Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in Oregon and one of the most visited natural landmarks in the Pacific Northwest — and yet this image finds it in a mood of unusual intimacy. Framed by the turning foliage of big-leaf maples in full autumn color, the falls appear as a single silver thread dropping from the top of a sheer basalt cliff, bisecting the frame with a vertical line of pure motion against the ancient dark rock. The colors of the surrounding forest are extraordinary: gold and amber and warm green, the maples at peak color against the deeper, cooler green of the conifers above, all of it glowing in the soft, diffuse light that the Columbia River Gorge does so well in autumn.

The composition draws the eye upward — from the warm foliage in the foreground, through the narrow channel of falling water, to the lip of the cliff far above where the creek tips over the edge and begins its long descent. The basalt face itself is a study in texture: columnar, ancient, moss-streaked, the geological record of volcanic events that shaped the entire gorge. Benson Bridge, the graceful stone arch that spans the falls midway, is just visible through the foliage — a detail that rewards the close attention of collectors who know this place. Silver Thread captures Multnomah Falls not as postcard landmark but as a work of natural architecture, elemental and enduring, dressed here in its finest autumn color. It belongs to Tamara Gooch's Pacific Northwest collection alongside companion waterfall and gorge images, and speaks to collectors drawn to the deep, lush beauty of Oregon in its most spectacular season.
