Perched on a sun-warmed granite ledge with his chin lifted and his orange feet planted firmly beneath him, this horned puffin poses with the self-possessed air of a bird that knows exactly how extraordinary he looks. The breeding plumage is at its peak: that vivid orange and yellow bill with its delicate red eye ring, the crisp black and white body plumage, the brilliant orange feet — a color palette so bold it would seem invented if it weren't entirely real.
