The snow lies in every crack and couloir and ledge of the mountain face, tracing the geology with a precision that no other condition could achieve — the white of the snow making readable what the bare rock obscures, the drainage patterns and fault lines and glacial scars all suddenly visible, the mountain's structural history laid out in white on dark grey for anyone patient enough to read it. The clouds move through and around the peaks with a restless, three-dimensional energy, partially obscuring and partially revealing the summits in a way that adds drama and atmospheric depth without softening the fundamental harshness and grandeur of what is being shown.
