There are moments in India when the landscape seems to produce its own mythology — when the light and the mist and the ancient terrain conspire to make visible something that feels less like a photograph of the world as it is than a window into the world as it has always been imagined. The Apparition is one of those moments: a white Marwari horse cresting a terracotta ridge in the early morning mist, perfectly centered between two bare acacia trees whose skeletal branches reach inward from either side of the frame like the arms of a natural portal, the pale misty sky behind him dissolving all horizon and all distance into a luminous, undifferentiated white that makes the horse appear to emerge from the light itself rather than from any specific place or time.
