The porcupine roach rises from the crown of his head like a crest of dark quills against the pale sky — dramatic, precise, and unmistakably intentional. Shot in close profile against a clean, open background, this portrait strips the pow wow ceremony down to its most elemental image: a face in three-quarter view, the beaded headband catching light along its fringe, the roach fanning upward in bold graphic form, a quiet half-smile suggesting a man at ease within a tradition that is entirely his own. The simplicity of the composition is its strength — no competing background, no crowd, no context beyond the subject himself and the heritage he carries. In black and white the roach becomes almost architectural, its individual quills rendered with striking clarity against the soft gray sky.
