Three as One is a portrait of the wild horse herd as it truly is — not the dramatic spectacle of the stallion charge or the wide sweep of horses across open range, but the quiet, daily intimacy of animals who live their entire lives in close physical and social contact, reading one another with a sensitivity and attentiveness that no human community quite matches. At Maggie Springs HMA in Wyoming, three mustangs press together in the pale winter light, their faces overlapping in the frame with the easy, unselfconscious closeness of a family — which is precisely what they are. The sepia treatment gives the image a warmth and timelessness that the stark black and white of the range would not have provided, the tonal palette of warm brown and cream drawing the three horses into a visual unity that mirrors their social bond. Each face is distinct and fully itself — the darker horse above, resting its chin on the appaloosa-marked horse in the center, whose own face touches the third beside it — and yet the composition reads as a single, unified form, three animals so comfortable in each other's presence that the boundaries between them have become almost optional.
