In the dry autumn grass of Custer State Park, two bighorn rams rest side by side with the unhurried ease of animals that have nothing left to prove. The massive curved horns — a lifetime of growth recorded in each ridge and curl — sweep back from their heads in the distinctive arc that has made the bighorn one of the most iconic wildlife subjects in the American West. Shot in close profile, the image places both rams in sharp relief against the warm amber background of the winter-dry grassland, their thick winter coats blending with the landscape in a natural camouflage that makes the encounter feel all the more fortunate. There is a quiet companionship here — two mature rams, at rest, in country they know completely. Two Rams is a wildlife portrait of understated power and warmth, a study in the particular dignity of the bighorn sheep that rewards slow looking and brings the wild character of the Black Hills into any interior it occupies.
