On the canyon floor a piece of weathered driftwood — carried in by one of the flash floods that carved this canyon over millennia and left stranded when the water receded — lies with its bleached branches spread across the warm pink sand, its pale, skeletal form a striking counterpoint to the rich, saturated tones of the canyon walls surrounding it and the luminous sand stream descending beside it. The composition moves from the glowing canyon walls above through the falling sand to the driftwood below with a natural, unhurried grace — the eye traveling the full depth and height of the canyon in a single frame, finding at every point something worth stopping for.
