This is Yellowstone at its most elemental — a landscape that has looked very much like this for thousands of years, and that still has the power to stop a traveler cold. Across the broad green expanse of Hayden Valley, a herd of American bison moves and grazes in the unhurried way of animals that have never been subordinate to anything. In the foreground, cows and calves cluster in the golden grass, their dark massive forms anchoring the composition with a weight and presence that no other North American animal can match. The Yellowstone River winds through the middle distance, blue and unhurried beneath a sky of extraordinary summer depth, and beyond it the herd continues — dozens of dark shapes scattered across the far meadow all the way to the treeline. The purple ridgeline of the Absaroka Range closes the horizon beneath towers of cumulus cloud, completing a scene of almost impossible grandeur.
Hayden Valley is one of the premier wildlife viewing areas in North America, and this image captures exactly why: the scale, the openness, the sense of a landscape still functioning as it was designed to function, with bison at its center. The calves visible among the adults speak to the season — summer in Yellowstone, when the valley is at its most lush and the herds are at their most active.
