The storm has passed and left this behind — a massive tangle of bull kelp coiled and draped across the sand at Bandon Beach, its long rope-like stipes curling over one another in dark brown loops that have an almost sculptural quality, as though arranged by a deliberate hand rather than deposited by the sea. Shot low and close from the sand, the kelp fills the foreground with extraordinary texture and complexity while the iconic Bandon sea stacks rise through the soft overcast haze behind, and the gray Pacific stretches between them in a band of quiet silver. The contrast between the organic chaos of the kelp in the foreground and the ordered geometry of the sea stacks in the distance gives the composition a depth and tension that rewards careful looking. Washed Ashore is a nature's details image in the truest sense — a close study of something the ocean discards without ceremony, revealed here as genuinely beautiful, and framed by one of the Oregon Coast's most celebrated seascapes.
