There are landscapes on this earth that seem to belong to another planet entirely — places where the familiar rules of color and texture and scale are suspended and replaced by something so purely elemental that the eye has no precedent for what it is seeing and simply has to start over. White Sands National Monument is one of those places, and White Sands captures it at its most hypnotically beautiful: a vast field of pure white gypsum sand stretching from the immediate foreground to the clean peak of a dune at the horizon, the surface inscribed by the wind with an intricate pattern of ripples and ridges that covers every inch of the frame with a texture of extraordinary delicacy and mathematical precision. The eye follows those ripples from the bottom of the frame upward and inward, drawn along the natural perspective lines of the dune surface toward the single clean peak against the blue New Mexico sky, and the journey is one of the most quietly satisfying compositional experiences in landscape photography — the texture changing subtly as the dune rises, the shadows in the ripple troughs deepening, the whole white world becoming more itself the further into it the eye travels. The sky above is a generous, luminous blue scattered with high thin cloud, its color the only contrast in an image otherwise composed entirely of white and the shadows within white — the shadow tones ranging from the palest blue-grey to a deeper cool shadow in the ripple troughs that gives the surface its extraordinary sense of three-dimensional depth and sculptural richness. This is minimalism at its most complex and most rewarding — an image that appears simple at a distance and reveals extraordinary detail and nuance the longer and closer it is examined.
