Thunder Rolls is the grandest and most elemental image in Tamara Gooch's Wyoming wild horse collection — a full herd of mustangs in open stampede across the sage desert, set against a sky of such dramatic, storm-driven intensity that the horses and the weather seem to be expressions of the same raw, unstoppable force. The storm that sent them running has painted the horizon in a deep, bruised palette of purple and amber and burnt orange, the last light of the sun breaking through the cloud base and illuminating the running horses and the sage flat below in a golden-red light that makes the entire landscape glow as though the earth itself is on fire. Dozens of horses stream across the panoramic frame — bay, grey, pinto, dark — the full diversity of the wild herd in full, committed motion, dust rising at their heels as the thunder that set them off rolls across the open basin. The scale of the image is extraordinary: the vast sweep of the Wyoming high desert, the enormous sky, the distant mountain range, and within all of that immensity, the herd running as wild horses have always run before a storm — together, fast, and entirely on their own terms.
