There is nothing groomed or polished about these horses, and that is precisely the point. Two dark mustang stallions stand shoulder to shoulder in the Wyoming high desert, their long, tangled manes falling across their necks in the wild profusion that only years of wind and weather can produce — no brush has touched them, no hand has shaped them, and the result is a raw, elemental beauty that domesticated horses simply cannot offer. Shot in close format against a pale, featureless sky, the image fills the frame with the texture and mass of the two horses — the heavy, unkempt manes, the thick winter coats, the quiet wariness in their dark eyes. In black and white the tonal contrasts are extraordinary, the dark coats and pale manes creating a graphic complexity that rewards a large print format enormously. Wild Ones is the most intimate of the Wyoming mustang images — not speed, not landscape, but pure animal presence at close range — and it brings the raw, unmediated wildness of the American mustang into any interior with a force that polished equine portraits cannot match.
