In the depth of a Yellowstone winter, when the landscape is buried in snow and the sky turns the particular deep blue that only comes with cold and altitude, a thermal spring glows turquoise against the white with an intensity that seems almost impossible. The contrast here is total — the warmth of the geothermal water against the frozen stillness of everything around it, the vivid color of the pool against the monochromatic white of the snow field, the billowing clouds above a landscape that is simultaneously frozen and boiling beneath the surface. The conifers and distant ridgeline give the panoramic composition depth and scale, and the blue sky with its dramatic cloud architecture closes the frame with the particular grandeur of a Yellowstone winter day at its most clear and beautiful.
