At 2,425 feet Yosemite Falls is the tallest waterfall in North America and one of the most dramatic natural spectacles on the continent — a fact that statistics can suggest but only the actual sight of the water can confirm, the sheer vertical distance of the fall so extreme that the water atomizes in the air long before it reaches the bottom, filling the canyon with a mist and a roar that can be felt as much as heard. Yosemite Falls captures both the upper and lower falls in a single compressed telephoto frame that reveals the full vertical sweep of the waterfall system with a clarity and a completeness that no wide-angle view from the valley floor could achieve — the upper fall thundering down the granite face from the rim above, the lower fall visible below it in its own separate plunge, the two connected by the cascade between them in a continuous vertical drama that drops more than nearly half a mile from top to bottom. The spring snowmelt has brought the falls to their full, furious peak — the water white and powerful and carrying the full volume of a Sierra Nevada winter released all at once down the sheer granite face, the mist visible at the base of the upper fall where the water hits the ledge and explodes outward before gathering itself for the final plunge. The granite walls on either side are rich with the warm amber and grey tones of Yosemite's ancient stone, the scattered vegetation clinging to every ledge and crack with the tenacious vitality of plants that have learned to live in the margins of one of the most dramatic geological environments on earth.
