Most horse portraits show the face. This one shows everything else — and in doing so reveals a different kind of beauty entirely. The Friesian turns in three-quarter rear profile, and the cool studio light finds the extraordinary musculature of his hindquarters, the deep through the flank, the arch of the neck as he turns his head just far enough to show the fine profile and the dark intelligent eye. The coat is black, but in this light it is also blue — the cool highlights finding a depth of color in the hair that warm light never reveals, turning what appears at first glance to be a simple dark horse into something shimmering and complex. The warm neutral background recedes softly behind him, keeping all attention on the form and color of the horse himself. Blue Black is the most sculptural portrait in the Friesian series — less about character and expression than about pure physical form, the horse as living sculpture revealed by light — and it brings a cool, sophisticated elegance to any interior that the warmer, more romantic images in the series approach differently.
