The sea stacks appear and disappear in the fog the way things do in dreams — present enough to anchor the middle distance, dissolved enough to suggest that they might not be entirely there. Ghost Coast is a portrait of the Brookings, Oregon coastline in the particular atmospheric condition that makes this stretch of the Pacific coast so distinctively itself — the blue-grey sea fog rolling in off the ocean and wrapping the offshore rocks in layers of soft obscurity while the surf continues its work in the foreground with complete indifference to the visibility conditions above it. The breaking wave that dominates the foreground is the image's great visual revelation — an extraordinary turquoise-green, its color startling against the cool monochrome of the fog and the flat grey of the ocean beyond, the curl catching the diffuse light with a clarity and luminosity that seems almost to generate its own illumination in an otherwise muted scene.
