He emerges from the darkness like something carved — massive through the shoulder, thickly curled across the poll, and utterly unhurried in his regard of the camera. This Red Angus bull is photographed in the tradition of the Old Masters: a single light source pulling form from a near-black ground, shadow and highlight working together to reveal weight, texture, and presence in equal measure. The result is less a livestock photograph than a portrait of raw power held in perfect stillness — the kind of image that reminds you that these animals are extraordinary, and that we rarely stop long enough to see them that way. Shot in black and white, the tonal rendering of his coat — every curl and fold of hide catching the light differently — gives the image a sculptural depth that rewards a large print format enormously.
